Dysart Short-term Rental Licensing By-law
The Municipality of Dysart et al passed a Short-term Rental (STR) licensing By-law without any Official Plan and Zoning By-law amendments. The licensing By-law could have a substantial impact on the area's land uses and residential neighbourhoods.
The by-law, #2024-14 is to come into effect on October 1, 2024.
We are not against STR’s, nor a licensing by-law, but we believe the STR licensing by-law is flawed.
The number of large hotel like STR commercial businesses are increasing in the Haliburton area. These properties are operating in residential neighbourhoods and are rented to large groups over and over all summer, and throughout the year. Many of them are operating year-round hotel-like businesses in seasonal residential waterfront zoning, with rents of more than $10,000 per week.
If you don’t have one near you already it could be coming to your neighbourhood very soon.
There is nothing in these by-laws differentiating between this commercial use and the occasional renter.
